Private Number

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Your number came through with no name on the screen I let it ring twice, then I checked what it means You never call late unless something has changed Now I'm holding my breath while it lights up again [Pre-Chorus] I know that pause before you speak That careful way you say my name If you have something you should tell me Don't make me guess why you came [Chorus] Private number, why tonight? You know I still pick up sometimes Say it plain, don't hide behind A blocked-out line and borrowed time Private number, tell the truth Is it old regret or something new? If it's really you, come through Private number, I'm listening to you [Verse 2] I moved your old shirt from the back of the chair Found that note in the pocket, your crooked “take care” I told all my friends that the door's closed for good But the phone knows the things that I wish that it would [Pre-Chorus] I know that pause before you speak That careful way you say my name If you have something you should tell me Don't make me guess why you came [Chorus] Private number, why tonight? You know I still pick up sometimes Say it plain, don't hide behind A blocked-out line and borrowed time Private number, tell the truth Is it old regret or something new? If it's really you, come through Private number, I'm listening to you [Bridge] No more half-said, almost sorry No more calling just to see If you want to find your way back Let the next call show it's me [Final Chorus] Private number, why tonight? You know I still pick up sometimes Say it plain, don't hide behind A blocked-out line and borrowed time Private number, tell the truth Is it old regret or something new? If it's really you, come through Private number, I'm listening to you [Outro] The screen goes dark, the room stays still I leave the phone beside the windowsill
