Rest Now, Little Heart

Lyrics

[Intro] Hey, little heart, you can rest awhile The night is kind, and you're safe right now [Verse 1] I know some days were heavier than they should have been You learned to read a room before you could walk in You held your breath through thunder that you didn't make And carried grown-up worries no child should take But you don't have to earn a place here by being brave You don't have to hide the tears you couldn't save I'm right here beside you, steady as the shore You can set that old hard armor by the door [Chorus] Close your eyes, let the small you wander Through a garden where the bluebirds sing I'll keep watch while your heart goes farther You can dream of every beautiful thing Take my hand, let the old fears loosen Let your colors spill across the sky You're safe now, little one, keep choosing All the lovely worlds you hold inside [Verse 2] Picture a paper boat that sails a silver stream A fox with a lantern leading through a dream A castle made of pillows, a moon that's made of cheese A field of painted flowers bending in the breeze You get to make the rules here; you can change the scene Let the brave kid in you be curious and free No one gets to tell you what your joy should be There's room inside this moment just for you and me [Chorus] Close your eyes, let the small you wander Through a garden where the bluebirds sing I'll keep watch while your heart goes farther You can dream of every beautiful thing Take my hand, let the old fears loosen Let your colors spill across the sky You're safe now, little one, keep choosing All the lovely worlds you hold inside [Bridge] If a memory knocks, you don't have to let it in We'll breathe in slow and count to ten again Your past is part of you, but it isn't all you are There's laughter still to find, and wonder near and far You can be soft, you can be loud You can take up space, you can make me proud No hurry, no test, no finish line to see Just a little more room to be who you want to be [Verse 3] Tomorrow can wait outside the bedroom door Tonight your heart can rest; it doesn't owe the world more I'll be here when morning lays gold across the floor And when you need a safe place, you can find me once more So tuck your worries gently underneath the quilt You were never to blame for the hurt that others built May the child in your chest find a wide open sky And keep making bright places where the wild dreams fly [Final Chorus] Close your eyes, let the small you wander Through a garden where the bluebirds sing I'll keep watch while your heart goes farther You can dream of every beautiful thing Take my hand, let the old fears loosen Let your colors spill across the sky You're safe now, little one, keep choosing All the lovely worlds you hold inside [Outro] Rest now, little heart, the night will carry you I'll be right here when the morning comes through
