Put That Match Down

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Dolph keeps a pack by the kitchen phone Another in his jacket, one out by the truck Says he’s cutting back when the coffee’s poured Then taps the ash and asks if I’ve got one more [Chorus] Dolph, you’re burning through the day One more cigarette, one more promise thrown away Your coat smells like a roadside diner’s back room Dolph, put that match down soon [Verse 2] He takes the long way out behind the feed-store Comes back smelling like the wind won’t let him go His sister gives him gum, his brother gives him grief He says, “I’ll quit on Monday,” like Monday brings relief [Chorus] Dolph, you’re burning through the day One more cigarette, one more promise thrown away Your coat smells like a roadside diner’s back room Dolph, put that match down soon [Bridge] At the county fair he bought a pocket watch Said he’d watch the minutes, said he’d watch the clock But every time the second hand came round He was out by the fence where the smoke curled down [Final Chorus] Dolph, you’re burning through the day One more cigarette, one more promise thrown away We’ll save you a seat when you’re ready to come through Dolph, we’d rather have you Dolph, put that match down soon [Outro] He pats his empty pocket, looks around Then asks who’s got a spare in town
