I Wear Your Absence Like a

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You left your coat beside the door Still holding rain along the seam I told the neighbors you were gone And let them keep their kinder dream [Pre-Chorus] The needle waits beside the lamp The room is cold, the hour is late I fold the silence into shape And fasten every borrowed weight [Chorus] I wear your absence like a jacket Buttoned up against the dawn Every sleeve remembers something Every mirror says you’re gone I wear your absence like a jacket Heavy as the words I hide If I look enough like you now Maybe no one asks me why [Verse 2] The hallway clock keeps losing time A floorboard answers every step Your name is still upon the mail A little promise I have kept [Pre-Chorus] The needle waits beside the lamp The room is cold, the hour is late I fold the silence into shape And fasten every borrowed weight [Chorus] I wear your absence like a jacket Buttoned up against the dawn Every sleeve remembers something Every mirror says you’re gone I wear your absence like a jacket Heavy as the words I hide If I look enough like you now Maybe no one asks me why [Bridge] At the window, morning gathers On the glass, a pale and judging eye I can hear the whole street waking I can’t make myself reply [Final Chorus] I wear your absence like a jacket Buttoned up against the dawn Every sleeve remembers something Every mirror says you’re gone I wear your absence like a jacket No warm lining left inside I can pass you in the doorway But I cannot wear your life [Outro] Beside the door, the raincoat hangs And no one asks me where you went
