Your Steady Hand

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Dad, Christmas came with frost on the pane The year you left, the whole house changed I still reach for the phone when trouble starts Then remember where you are You could make a dead truck turn over Talk a worried heart back down I wish I had your hands here now I wish I had your voice around [Chorus] I still need your steady hand When I don't know what to do I tell the boys the things you taught me And the stories I remember of you Ryan and Jensen would've loved you They would've climbed right up your knees Now all I have are words to give them And the way you live in me [Verse 2] You never saw those two come running With their muddy shoes and questions wide I can see you grinning in the doorway Making room for them inside You'd show them how to hold a wrench How to listen before you speak How a man can be both strong and gentle How to keep his promises [Chorus] I still need your steady hand When I don't know what to do I tell the boys the things you taught me And the stories I remember of you Ryan and Jensen would've loved you They would've climbed right up your knees Now all I have are words to give them And the way you live in me [Bridge] If you can hear me, Dad, I'm trying Some days I get it right, some days I don't When the boys ask what you'd say to them I tell them what I know That you'd say, take your time, son Be there when they call And if you can't fix everything Just love them through it all [Final Chorus] I still need your steady hand Though I can't reach out to you I tell the boys the things you taught me And the stories I remember of you Ryan and Jensen would've loved you I know they'd have felt your care So I'll keep your name alive between us In every story that I share [Outro] Dad, Christmas still brings back your voice Deep and calm, like you were near I'll tell the boys about their granddad And make sure they know you were here
