When the Weather Turns

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Rain finds the cracks in the courthouse stone You said keep moving, but I came alone A paper cup rolls by the county line Your old blue jacket still smells like pine [Pre-Chorus] I keep your number folded in my shoe Like one more mile might lead me back to you [Chorus] When the weather turns, I hear you call Through the open window, through the garden wall I was built to leave, but I circle back Every road runs out where the clouds go black [Verse 2] I made my rent with a borrowed name Took the long way home to outrun the blame You had a laugh like a screen door slam And a way of seeing who I really am [Rap Verse] Two jobs, one coat, bus pass bent in the middle Kept my plans in a pocket with a loose change rattle Told the folks back home that the deal came through But the only thing I closed was the door on you Now the rain taps time on the tin roof hard I read your last note by the corner store yard No big speech, no saint, no grand escape Just a man with a map and a heart out of shape [Chorus] When the weather turns, I hear you call Through the open window, through the garden wall I was built to leave, but I circle back Every road runs out where the clouds go black [Bridge] There’s a low old ache in the river bend It knows every goodbye and the shape of a friend If you leave the porch light burning tonight I’ll bring back the truth in the morning light [Final Chorus] When the weather turns, I hear you call Through the open window, through the garden wall I was built to leave, but I circle back Every road runs out where the clouds go black [Outro] I circle back I circle back
