Beside the Western Shore

Lyrics

[Verse 1] The kettle sang at dawn beside the quay, And gulls came wheeling over Galway Bay. You tied your red scarf, laughed against the rain, Then waved from the westbound morning train. [Chorus] So raise a cup to roads that wind and roam, To every heart that finds its way back home. And when the harbor bells ring out once more, I’ll meet you, love, beside the western shore. [Verse 2] Your mother keeps the blue mug by the stove, The one you chipped the summer that you drove Us up the coast to watch the salmon run, And miss the last bus laughing in the sun. [Chorus] So raise a cup to roads that wind and roam, To every heart that finds its way back home. And when the harbor bells ring out once more, I’ll meet you, love, beside the western shore. [Bridge] Though years may turn the lanes to unfamiliar ground, The names we learned are still the ones we sound. A fiddle starts; the whole room joins the tune, And far away, you’re singing with us soon. [Final Chorus] So raise a cup to roads that wind and roam, To every heart that finds its way back home. And when the harbor bells ring out once more, I’ll meet you, love, beside the western shore. I’ll meet you, love, beside the western shore.
