The Blue Star

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You said you liked me as a friend By the bike racks after school I nodded like I knew what that meant Then missed the bus home in the rain [Verse 2] At dinner I pushed peas around Dad asked how the math test went I said, “Fine,” and took my plate upstairs Your blue paper star still in my book [Chorus] I thought the hurt would make me smaller Like a coat I couldn’t take off But morning found me in the kitchen Making toast and calling it enough You don’t owe me what I wanted I can let the wanting pass There’s a whole day waiting past this And I’m learning how to meet it as myself [Verse 3] Milo saved a seat beside him At the game on Friday night We traded jokes about the mascot And I laughed before I thought [Bridge] Maybe someday I’ll remember This was one door, not the town One honest answer, hard to hear Still didn’t turn my life around [Final Chorus] I thought the hurt would make me smaller Like a coat I couldn’t take off But morning found me in the kitchen Making toast and calling it enough You don’t owe me what I wanted I can let the wanting pass There’s a whole day waiting past this And I’m learning how to meet it as myself [Outro] The blue star’s tucked inside my book I’ll leave it there, and let it be
