Your Steady Hand

Lyrics

[Verse 1] The Christmas boxes still come down each year I find your old work gloves and stop right there December came too soon in 2015 You left before the tree was trimmed I still catch myself reaching for the phone When some small thing goes wrong at home You’d hear me out, then take a look And know exactly where to start [Chorus] Dad, I could use your steady hand tonight That calm, low voice that made the trouble feel less wide You could fix a busted hinge, a bad day, a worn-out heart You always found the simple place to start I miss you more than these old words can say I still need your guidance when I lose my way If you can hear me through the miles above I’m still your kid, and I still need your love [Verse 2] The kitchen tap is dripping like before I set your wrench beside the drawer I turn it once, then think of how you’d grin And tell me, “Try the other way again” You never made a fuss or raised your voice You’d slow the room and help me find a choice Now every hard decision takes more time Without your quiet confidence beside mine [Chorus] Dad, I could use your steady hand tonight That calm, low voice that made the trouble feel less wide You could fix a busted hinge, a bad day, a worn-out heart You always found the simple place to start I miss you more than these old words can say I still need your guidance when I lose my way If you can hear me through the miles above I’m still your kid, and I still need your love [Bridge] I hope you know I’m doing what I can I hear your patience in the way I make a plan When I’m afraid, I ask what you would do Then take a breath and try to follow through [Final Chorus] Dad, I could use your steady hand tonight That calm, low voice still helps me set things right You could fix a busted hinge, a bad day, a worn-out heart You taught me how to find the place to start I miss you more than these old words can say I still need your guidance when I lose my way Though Christmas comes and you’re not walking through I’m still your kid, and I’m still learning from you [Outro] The tap runs clear, the house is still I hear your calm in the quiet, and I always will
