One Foot Down

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You left your blue coat on the kitchen chair A paper receipt tucked inside the sleeve The kettle clicked, the morning filled with rain I read the date and let the small things breathe [Pre-Chorus] I used to think that leaving meant a door A clean goodbye, a line across the floor But every room keeps something we once knew And I keep learning how to live it through [Chorus] I’m putting one foot down, then another Letting the day come in around me I won’t erase the shape you made here I’ll make a life that holds it gently One foot down, then another Past the place where I got stuck I can miss you and keep moving I can hurt and still get up [Verse 2] The corner shop has changed its window sign The old man there still calls me by my name I bought two pears, then laughed at what I’d done And carried both back home just the same [Pre-Chorus] Some things return in ordinary clothes A song from someone’s car, a branch that grows I let them come; I let them pass me through There’s room for what I lost and what is new [Chorus] I’m putting one foot down, then another Letting the day come in around me I won’t erase the shape you made here I’ll make a life that holds it gently One foot down, then another Past the place where I got stuck I can miss you and keep moving I can hurt and still get up [Bridge] If I could speak to who I was that night I’d say, the morning doesn’t ask you to be fine Just open up the curtains, take a breath Then take the next small step you can manage [Final Chorus] I’m putting one foot down, then another Letting the day come in around me I won’t erase the shape you made here I’ll make a life that holds it gently One foot down, then another There’s a little room for luck I can miss you and keep moving I can hurt and still get up [Outro] One foot down, then another I can hurt and still get up
