The Kettle Clicks

Lyrics

[Verse 1] The kettle clicks before the sun Your blue mug waits beside the sink The bus sighs open at the corner A paper sack of apples swings You ask me if I slept all right I say, “Enough to make the day” We leave the question on the table And take our usual way [Chorus] Life goes on and on Through the small things we get done A door pulled shut, a meal shared late A little more than yesterday Life goes on and on Even when we lose the thread We find the morning, make the call And keep on going after all [Verse 2] The garden hose has sprung a leak You knot it where the water runs The neighbor waves with both hands full Of peaches from her brother’s farm A letter comes with someone’s news We read it twice, then set it down The afternoon keeps asking softly For the errands in town [Chorus] Life goes on and on Through the small things we get done A door pulled shut, a meal shared late A little more than yesterday Life goes on and on Even when we lose the thread We find the morning, make the call And keep on going after all [Bridge] Some years arrive like heavy boxes Some pass lightly through the hall You learn which names to keep beside you You learn to answer when they call [Final Chorus] Life goes on and on Through the small things we get done A coat lent out, a light left on A quiet kindness carried on Life goes on and on Past the plans we never made We find the morning, make the call And keep on going after all [Outro] The kettle clicks, the day begins We take our usual way
