Beneath My Phone Case

Lyrics

[Verse 1] I kept your name beneath my phone case Like a ticket I was scared to lose At lunch you said, “You’re really sweet, but” And the rest fell quiet in the room I nodded like I had an answer Made a joke and watched you smile Then walked home past the corner bakery Taking twenty minutes for one mile [Pre-Chorus] My brother asked why dinner stayed untouched I said I wasn’t hungry, that was enough [Chorus] You didn’t break me, but you changed the shape Of every little hope I used to make Now your “maybe someday” sits beside my bed A sentence I replay instead of sleep again I wanted your hand, you wanted to be kind So I’m learning how to leave that wish behind [Verse 2] I deleted our unfinished playlist Then restored it after half an hour Your last message still says “take care” Two small words with way too much power At school I choose the longer staircase Just to miss the crowd outside your class I’m not angry, I just need some distance From the future I imagined would last [Pre-Chorus] My mother left a note beside my plate “Some doors close before you know their weight” [Chorus] You didn’t break me, but you changed the shape Of every little hope I used to make Now your “maybe someday” sits beside my bed A sentence I replay instead of sleep again I wanted your hand, you wanted to be kind So I’m learning how to leave that wish behind [Bridge] One day I’ll pass you without counting breaths Without turning every kindness into something else You’ll be a chapter, not the whole blue book A name I can remember without needing you to look [Final Chorus] You didn’t break me, you just told the truth And truth can hurt without being cruel I’ll carry the lesson, not the empty chair Not every feeling needs somebody there I wanted your hand, but I’ll be all right Some hearts heal slowly, then surprise you overnight [Outro] I kept your name beneath my phone case Now I’m taking it out, one day at a time
