Your Coat on the Kitchen Chair

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You left your coat on the kitchen chair A bus ticket folded inside the seam The kettle clicked in the rented air I watched the window collect the steam [Pre-Chorus] You said, “Don’t make a story of this” Then took the long way down the stairs [Chorus] We were young enough to call it fate Too proud to ask what we could save Now every road runs past your gate And I still turn my head that way [Verse 2] The corner shop changed hands in June The old man’s radio still skips the news I keep your note in a paperback Between the pages I never use [Pre-Chorus] You said, “Don’t make a story of this” But I’ve been writing one for years [Chorus] We were young enough to call it fate Too proud to ask what we could save Now every road runs past your gate And I still turn my head that way [Bridge] If I saw you by the station wall Would we laugh like nothing happened at all? Would you ask about the life I chose? Would I tell you what nobody knows? [Final Chorus] We were young enough to call it fate Too proud to ask what we could save Now every road runs past your gate And I still turn my head that way I still turn my head that way [Outro] Your coat’s gone from the kitchen chair The room looks bigger than it should
