First Step, Then Another

Lyrics

[Intro] Yeah, came in steady, came in clear Whole room knows when I’m here [Verse 1] First train rattles past the corner store Rain on my jacket, still I want more Notebook folded in a back pocket seam Small-town steps with a big-city dream I learned my pace on the cracked-up court Kept my word when the days ran short Now every no put a spark in the plan I make my own way, I know who I am [Chorus] I keep moving, I don’t fold Turn a little into gold From the first step to the whole wide view I make my mark with the work I do I keep moving, steady and true Every hard mile pulls me through When the door shuts, I find one more way I build my tomorrow from the work today [Verse 2] Old friends call when the checks come in Same old laugh, same crooked grin Mama says, “Keep both feet on the ground” So I bring that advice every time I’m around No borrowed crown, no shortcut route I know what the long road’s all about One clean page and a pen that writes Turn late-night plans into daylight sights [Chorus] I keep moving, I don’t fold Turn a little into gold From the first step to the whole wide view I make my mark with the work I do I keep moving, steady and true Every hard mile pulls me through When the door shuts, I find one more way I build my tomorrow from the work today [Outro] First step, then another, that’s how I came No need for a shortcut, remember the name
