The Black Cat Café

Lyrics

[Verse 1] The bell above the door rang twice Though no one crossed the street A black cat sat beside the till With silver in its teeth The owner poured a cup of tea And set it by the flame Then every clock began to chime And called my name [Pre-Chorus] You said, “The night is just a room With all the curtains drawn” I saw your shadow leave the chair Before you were gone [Chorus] At the Black Cat Café Where the candles lean and sway You can order one more minute You can’t make the dark obey At the Black Cat Café Where the last train never came I’ll keep your seat beside me Till the morning knows my name [Verse 2] A paper moon hung from the beam A menu listed dreams The waiter wore a crooked smile And knew what I had seen You slid a note across the table: “Don’t wait up for the dawn” The cat knocked over both our cups And watched the ink run on [Pre-Chorus] You said, “Some doors are only doors When someone turns the key” I heard your footsteps in the hall Then none at all but me [Chorus] At the Black Cat Café Where the candles lean and sway You can order one more minute You can’t make the dark obey At the Black Cat Café Where the last train never came I’ll keep your seat beside me Till the morning knows my name [Bridge] The chairs were stacked, the windows white The street was empty, clean A single pawprint crossed the floor And led beneath the door I found your note beneath the till Your handwriting, your hand The cat was curled around the key And would not let me stand [Final Chorus] At the Black Cat Café Where the candles lean and sway You can order one more minute You can’t make the dark obey At the Black Cat Café I’ll leave the door unlatched If you come back by midnight I’ll know the sound you lack [Outro] The bell above the door rang twice The cat looked up at me I set two cups beside the flame And let the night come in
