Come Back With the Truth

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You left your coffee by the sink A blue chipped cup, the one I think You took from that old corner store And never told me what it was for [Pre-Chorus] I kept the receipt inside a book As if a paper trail could make you look Back through the years we let go by And give one honest reason why [Chorus] If you come back, come back with the truth Not a softer version of what you used to do I can take the weight, I can face the proof But don’t bring me promises dressed up new If you come back, come back with the truth [Verse 2] The landlord changed the hallway light Now every door looks wrong at night Your name is gone from mailbox three But rain still taps your rhythm into me [Pre-Chorus] I found your jacket in the hall It smelled like cedar, dust, and fall I almost called, then let it ring Some things deserve a quieter ending [Chorus] If you come back, come back with the truth Not a softer version of what you used to do I can take the weight, I can face the proof But don’t bring me promises dressed up new If you come back, come back with the truth [Bridge] I’m not waiting by the window I’m not counting passing cars I just want the door left open For the person that you are [Final Chorus] If you come back, come back with the truth Every missing piece can find a place to move I can take the weight, I can face the proof Let the silence end with something we can use If you come back, come back with the truth [Outro] The blue cup waits beside the sink I take a breath, I stop to think
