Summer soaked sidewalks

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Back gate squeaking in the July heat Garden hose coiled like a sleeping snake You filled one red and I filled one green Tied them off with shaking hands We drew a line in the dry dirt Said don't you cross it, no fair, no fair Your mother watched from the kitchen window Wiped her hands on her apron slow [Chorus] Water on the sidewalk, water on our shoes Summer on our shoulders, nothing left to lose Oh, we can't hold the season, we can only hold the tune Water on the sidewalk, water on our shoes [Verse 2] First one landed on my collarbone Cold like a coin dropped down my back I chased you past the lilac bush You screamed and ducked behind the shed We soaked the fence and the laundry line White sheets flapping like they wanted to fly For a minute there we forgot the time For a minute there we forgot goodbye [Chorus] Water on the sidewalk, water on our shoes Summer on our shoulders, nothing left to lose Oh, we can't hold the season, we can only hold the tune Water on the sidewalk, water on our shoes [Bridge] Now the yard's a parking lot And the hose is rusted through But I still hear you laughing In the middle of the afternoon I still hear you laughing In the middle of the afternoon [Verse 3] I saw you last at a drugstore counter Buying sunscreen for a different shore You said remember when we flooded The whole damn block and the neighbor's door We didn't say we missed it We just paid and walked away But the summer's in my pocket Like a balloon that wouldn't pop [Chorus] Water on the sidewalk, water on our shoes Summer on our shoulders, nothing left to lose Oh, we can't hold the season, we can only hold the tune Water on the sidewalk, water on our shoes [Outro] Back gate squeaking in the July heat You filled one red and I filled one green
