Out of Ordinary

Lyrics

[Intro – Bouncing bass, clipped guitar, bright synth] Oh-oh, oh-oh Never looked good in a straight line Oh-oh, oh-oh Good thing I don’t have to [Verse 1 – Quick, conversational] Monday morning, everybody’s in a hurry Coffee on my shirt, but I’m not worried There’s a man on the train with a newspaper face Telling me I ought to know my place I’ve been trying on the words they handed me Like a borrowed coat that never fit right They said, “Keep it down, you’ll get used to it” I said, “Maybe, but I don’t think I might” [Pre-Chorus – Rising guitars and harmonies] I spent too long looking through the glass At everybody getting somewhere fast Then I caught my reflection in the door And thought, what am I waiting for? [Chorus – Explosive, melodic, danceable] I’m out of the ordinary A little left of where I’m meant to be If I don’t fit the picture Maybe there’s a bigger scene Oh, I don’t need to be legendary Don’t need the whole world staring at me There’s no one else who sees it quite like I do And that’s enough for me Out of the ordinary Oh-oh, oh-oh That’s alright with me [Post-Chorus – Bass and falsetto call-and-response] Hey! A little out of line Hey! But the view’s just fine Oh-oh, oh-oh That’s alright with me [Verse 2 – Funky rhythm, angular guitar] My friend wears yellow when the skies turn grey Says it helps her find her way through the day Old man dancing at the crossing light Missed the green, but he got the timing right Funny how the things we try to hide Are the things that make us recognizable You can spend your life rehearsing someone else Or show up a little uncomfortable [Pre-Chorus – Building] I used to think there was a secret code Some perfect way to walk this road But everybody’s making up the steps And I haven’t missed my chance yet [Chorus – Full band, layered voices] We’re out of the ordinary A little left of where we’re meant to be If we don’t fit the picture Maybe there’s a bigger scene Oh, we don’t need to be legendary Don’t need the whole world staring to see There’s no one else who sees it quite like you do And that’s enough for me Out of the ordinary Oh-oh, oh-oh That’s alright with me [Instrumental – Fuzzy bass riff, guitar and synth trade hooks] [Bridge – Stripped-down beat, intimate lead vocal] Some days I still want to disappear Put on the right face, say what they want to hear But I know how that story ends A crowded room and nobody in it So take your crooked little masterpiece Your half-formed plans and your odd beliefs There’s room for all of it out here Come as you are, come as you are [Build – Drums return, rising chant] No straight line! No perfect time! One, two, three— Come on, come on! [Final Chorus – Explosive harmonies, driving drums] We’re out of the ordinary A little left of where we’re meant to be If we don’t fit the picture Maybe there’s a bigger scene Oh, we don’t need to be legendary Don’t need the whole world staring to see There’s no one else who sees it quite like you do And that’s enough for me Out of the ordinary Oh-oh, oh-oh And that’s alright with me [Outro – Bass and guitar hook, abrupt finish] Never looked good in a straight line Good thing I don’t have to Oh-oh, oh-oh Good thing I don’t have to
