Look at US

Lyrics

[Verse 1] It was raining when you walked up, So sure you knew my face. I watched your smile turn sideways When you realized your mistake. You were looking for somebody; I was trying not to laugh. Neither one of us could see Our whole life starting just like that. We talked above the music, Missed a few beats, missed a few signs. You weren’t sure we had a spark, And neither was I. Funny what we almost miss When we think we know so much. I couldn’t picture our next date— Now I can’t picture life without us. [Pre-Chorus] There wasn’t some big moment, No voice that said, “He’s the one.” Just a hundred little reasons To stay a little longer each time. [Chorus] Now look at us, Your ring against my hand. A little boy down the hallway Who calls us both his dads. We didn’t see forever Through the windows and the rain. You came looking for somebody else, But you found me anyway. Now look at us— All the days we couldn’t see. You know who I am now, And you still reach for me. [Verse 2] It happened in the ordinary, Your name lighting up my phone. “Tell me how your day went.” “Let me know when you get home.” Somewhere in those conversations, In the things we didn’t plan, I started saving you a place In every picture of my life I had. Then came rings and being fathers, Learning as we went along. Finding out how much a heart Could hold and still keep holding on. Sometimes I hear you with Elijah, And I stop outside the door. That voice I barely knew one night Is the voice I listen for. [Pre-Chorus] And I wish I told you better, In the middle of the day, Before we’re tired, before we’re sleeping, Before the moment slips away. [Bridge] I don’t always have the words, Carlos. Sometimes I let the whole day pass. I ask about tomorrow When I should be asking how you are. There’s so much life to get through, So much asking for our time. But I still want to know your thoughts When we turn out all the lights. And sometimes loving you this much Makes me scared of time itself— Our little boy keeps getting taller, Pictures gather on the shelves. So come and sit beside me. Let the dishes wait tonight. I keep wishing time would slow down While I hurry through our life. Let me hold you for a minute. Let me get this part right. [Final Chorus] Now look at us, Your ring against my hand. I’ve watched you become a father; I get to be your man. If I could find myself that evening, Standing halfway in the rain, I wouldn’t tell him what was coming. I’d let you walk his way. Now look at us— I’m still learning things about you. Still want to hear your stories, Even ones I’ve heard before. Let me kiss you in the kitchen. Let me meet you at the door. After everything we’ve lived, I still want a little more. [Outro] You thought I was somebody else. I’m glad you came to see. Of all the ways this life could go, I get you here with me. And if you asked me now, Carlos, Knowing all that we’ve been through— I’d stand in that rain a thousand nights For one more life with you.
