Porch Light On

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You left your blue scarf on the back of my chair A grocery list folded with your careful square Two pears, black tea, the good soap for your hands Small plans on paper I still understand The radiator ticks like a clock with a limp Rain draws a map down the old window trim I set out two cups, then I put one away Some habits take longer than people to change [Chorus] I keep the porch light on till the kettle goes cold Not waiting for a miracle, just doing what I know Your name in the margin, your coat by the door I’m learning what a home is when it’s home no more [Verse 2] The corner shop owner still asks how you’ve been I say, “Taking it easy,” and smile like a friend Your sister sent a photo: the garden came through Those stubborn red tomatoes you planted in June I finally fixed that hinge that complained every night Found your old bus pass tucked under the light I don’t call it a sign, don’t dress it in gold Just a little proof that the days still unfold [Chorus] I keep the porch light on till the kettle goes cold Not waiting for a miracle, just doing what I know Your name in the margin, your coat by the door I’m learning what a home is when it’s home no more [Bridge] If you pass this block, take the steps slow The third one still dips where the rainwater goes No grand goodbye, no debt to repay Just a cup on the shelf and a clear patch of day [Verse 3] Now the blue scarf’s folded in the cedarwood drawer I walk to the market and buy one pear more The sky over Linden is plain winter gray But the baker puts cinnamon rolls out today I bring one back warm, let the kitchen fill up Set down a single cup, pour tea to the top I can miss you and still let the morning begin There’s room in this quiet for both things to live in [Chorus] I keep the porch light on till the kettle goes cold Not waiting for a miracle, just doing what I know Your name in the margin, your coat by the door I’m learning what a home is when it’s home no more [Outro] The hinge swings easy The rain lets up One cup, one window And enough
