Why Do You Care?

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Katrina found the paper sack By the passenger-side floor Two packs tucked beside the map And one gum wrapper more She held them up and asked him As they rolled past Miller’s sign “Why’d you buy us cigarettes, Kyle? You know I quit last July.” [Chorus] He looked at her and said, “Why do you care?” Like that answered everything right there She blinked twice, then fixed her hair “Well, I’m asking ’cause they’re sitting in my chair” He shrugged like a judge with a courthouse stare Katrina said, “You’re a wonder, I swear” She asked him why he bought them, fair and square And Kyle just said, “Why do you care?” [Verse 2] He said, “They’re for the fellas down at Dale’s” Then checked the glovebox twice She said, “Those fellas don’t ride with us And Dale’s been closed since nine” He gave a little cough and tried To change the radio station She said, “You bought a mystery And brought it on vacation” [Chorus] He looked at her and said, “Why do you care?” Like that answered everything right there She blinked twice, then fixed her hair “Well, I’m asking ’cause they’re sitting in my chair” He shrugged like a judge with a courthouse stare Katrina said, “You’re a wonder, I swear” She asked him why he bought them, fair and square And Kyle just said, “Why do you care?” [Bridge] At the motel he confessed at last: “They were buy-one, get-one free” She said, “That’s not a reason, Kyle, That’s a coupon with a speech” He said, “Well, now you know the whole thing” She said, “No, I know the price” Then took the keys and ordered pie And made him ask her twice [Final Chorus] He looked at her and said, “Why do you care?” She said, “Because you bought them, and they’re there” He blinked twice and fixed his hair “Well, I’m asking ’cause you’re giving me that stare” She laughed and said, “You’re a wonder, I swear” Then left those cigarettes untouched right there Katrina asked him once; he answered square: “Why do you care?” [Outro] She took the pie, he took the chair And Kyle still wonders why she cares
