The Summers We Misplaced

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Your postcard sleeps inside the drawer Blue ink running at the fold I trace the date you wrote before The seasons turned the paper old [Pre-Chorus] That little room above the store Still comes back when rain begins I hear your key against the door Then silence settles in [Chorus] I keep the summers we misplaced In photographs with softened edges Your voice still lingers in that place Between the words and what I said If memory could let me through I’d take the long way home to you [Verse 2] The station clock was running slow Your coat was buttoned to the chin You waved until the train pulled low And I was sure you’d write again [Pre-Chorus] Now every year has changed the view But not the color of that day I keep one seat reserved for you Though time has taken you away [Chorus] I keep the summers we misplaced In photographs with softened edges Your voice still lingers in that place Between the words and what I said If memory could let me through I’d take the long way home to you [Bridge] Maybe somewhere past the years We’d meet beneath that station sign You’d laugh at how I held back tears And say we still had plenty of time [Final Chorus] I keep the summers we misplaced Though every picture fades to gray Your voice still finds me in that place And carries what I couldn’t say If memory could lead me through I’d take the long way home to you [Outro] The postcard sleeps inside the drawer I leave it where it was before
