Hunting My Heart

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Keep your orange vest on, don’t wander past the creek You said you knew this property; you’ve been lost since half past three I’ve got the thermos, you’ve got snacks enough for ten And that little hand warmer you keep lending back again You whisper, “Did you hear that?” I say, “I heard your zipper” You’ve been trying not to sneeze for nearly forty minutes Then a squirrel jumps the brush and you about climb my knee You’re the bravest deer hunter I’ve ever seen [Pre-Chorus] Easy now Take it slow Watch that branch There you go [Chorus] You came for the deer, but you’re hunting my heart You say “stay still” while you’re tearing my plans apart You came for the deer, but you’re grinning at me Like the best thing out here is the company You came for the deer, but you’re hunting my heart You came for the deer, but you’re hunting my heart [Verse 2] You packed a turkey sandwich and forgot the mustard Now you’re bargaining with me for the last bite of mine You’ve got a twig in your hat and a leaf on your cheek And you claim that the whole thing is “part of the technique” I’ve seen you take aim at a paper plate from thirty yards away But you’re checking my face more than the trees today You say, “If one comes through, I’ll be ready, you’ll see” I say, “I believe you,” and you lean into me [Pre-Chorus] Easy now Take it slow Watch that branch There you go [Chorus] You came for the deer, but you’re hunting my heart You say “stay still” while you’re tearing my plans apart You came for the deer, but you’re grinning at me Like the best thing out here is the company You came for the deer, but you’re hunting my heart You came for the deer, but you’re hunting my heart [Bridge] Then you nudge my elbow, point beyond the brush And for once we both quit talking, both of us hush A doe steps through, you let the moment pass You say, “I’m good right here,” and squeeze my hand Well, I knew that already [Final Chorus] You came for the deer, but you’re hunting my heart You say “stay still” while you’re tearing my plans apart You came for the deer, but you’re grinning at me Like the best thing out here is the company You came for the deer, but you’re hunting my heart You came for the deer, but you’re hunting my heart [Outro] Keep your orange vest on, don’t wander past the creek You’re still the bravest deer hunter I’ve ever seen
