Set the Burden Down

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Jose left the uniform folded in a drawer, Still checks the latch before he leaves the door. At the grocery aisle, he keeps the wall in sight, Counts the exits without thinking twice. [Pre-Chorus] They say the quiet life is where the hard part ends, But his shoulders never got the message. [Chorus] Jose keeps moving, keeps his eyes ahead, Every room mapped out, every word measured. Work till the daylight slips out of view, No rest comes easy when your guard stays true. Jose, set the burden down awhile— You’re home now, even if it takes a while. [Verse 2] Coffee gone cold beside the timecard stack, He says “I’m fine” and gets right back. His old boots wait beneath the kitchen chair, He hears a truck backfire and he’s already there. [Pre-Chorus] His friends say, “Brother, you can breathe again,” He nods, then checks the window once more. [Chorus] Jose keeps moving, keeps his eyes ahead, Every room mapped out, every word measured. Work till the daylight slips out of view, No rest comes easy when your guard stays true. Jose, set the burden down awhile— You’re home now, even if it takes a while. [Bridge] One Sunday morning, he left the phone inside, Walked past the fence with his hands at his sides. The road kept winding; nothing called him back. For once, he let the whole day pass. [Final Chorus] Jose keeps moving, but he looks around, Lets one long breath settle him down. Work can wait till the morning comes through, Rest is a fight he can learn to choose. Jose, set the burden down awhile— You’re home now. Stay here for a while. [Outro] The latch is secure, the coffee’s warm, Jose sits still through a passing storm.
