Two Cuts in the Pinewood Gate

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Snow has sealed the old road shut Your name is stitched inside my coat The watchfires lean against the wind I hear your laugh where ravens float We left our marks on the pinewood gate Two crooked cuts beneath the grain If one of us comes back alone He brings the other’s name again [Chorus] Brother, I’ll be by your side through this war When the frost takes the fields and the wolves cross the moor Keep one hand on the promise, one eye on the dawn We’ll follow the river till the long cold is gone Brother, I’ll be by your side through this war And I’ll walk you home to the door [Verse 2] Your scarf is red with melted snow Your left boot split beside the ford You say the ridge is full of smoke I say then stay behind my sword We count the days by empty bowls By every roof the blizzard hides But somewhere past the blackened pass A kitchen lamp is burning wide [Chorus] Brother, I’ll be by your side through this war When the frost takes the fields and the wolves cross the moor Keep one hand on the promise, one eye on the dawn We’ll follow the river till the long cold is gone Brother, I’ll be by your side through this war And I’ll walk you home to the door [Bridge] If I fall, take the narrow trail Past the birch with the split white limb Tell them both we kept our word Tell them I was walking with him [Final Chorus] Brother, I’ll be by your side through this war Though the snow hides the tracks and the north wind roars Keep one hand on the promise, one eye on the dawn We’ll follow the river till the long cold is gone Brother, I’ll be by your side through this war And I’ll walk you home to the door [Outro] Two cuts in the pinewood gate Two shadows crossing the snow
