Gone Before the Morning Knows

Lyrics

[Intro] Palm dust on the windshield, county line behind One red light blinking on the edge of town [Verse 1] You said meet me where the freeway bends At the wash that shuts at ten I brought the keys, you brought the map And a jacket with a torn-up hem We cut through lots behind the mall Past the guard who knew us both You laughed and said, “Don’t make a plan” Then folded up the only note [Pre-Chorus] Now the radio is low And the fuel needle’s near the line You keep your eyes upon the road I keep one hand over mine [Chorus] We’re gone before the morning knows Dust on the glass, nowhere to go If the whole wide county calls our names Let it call, let it call We won’t slow [Verse 2] At the motel, room sixteen The ice machine kept time all night You counted cash beside the sink I watched the curtains catch the light You had a brother up in Blaine A cousin working at the docks I had a tank, a spare, a coat And two old watches in a box [Pre-Chorus] Now the radio is low And the fuel needle’s near the line You keep your eyes upon the road I keep one hand over mine [Chorus] We’re gone before the morning knows Dust on the glass, nowhere to go If the whole wide county calls our names Let it call, let it call We won’t slow [Bridge] You asked me if I’d turn around I said, “Not while you’re here” The bridge came up, the river ran And the first pale hour drew near [Final Chorus] We’re gone before the morning knows Dust on the glass, nowhere to go If the whole wide county calls our names Let it call, let it call We won’t slow [Outro] Past the last exit sign Your hand still warm in mine
