The Porch Light

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You left your blue coat on the chair The one with rain stitched in the seams I found a ticket in the pocket For the ferry out to Greybridge Bay [Pre-Chorus] The kettle clicked, the room went still Your handwriting leaned against the sill [Chorus] If you come back by the morning boat I’ll be waiting where the gulls turn low With your blue coat folded on my arm And the porch light keeping watch till dawn If you come back, you don’t need a reason Just bring the salt air in with you [Verse 2] Mrs. Vale was sweeping up the shop She said the tide had changed at ten I bought two pears from her green crate And saved the softer one again [Pre-Chorus] The kettle clicked, the room went still Your handwriting leaned against the sill [Chorus] If you come back by the morning boat I’ll be waiting where the gulls turn low With your blue coat folded on my arm And the porch light keeping watch till dawn If you come back, you don’t need a reason Just bring the salt air in with you [Bridge] Maybe roads are made for leaving Maybe harbors teach us why I won’t ask where you have been I’ll just ask if you’re all right [Final Chorus] If you come back by the morning boat I’ll be waiting where the gulls turn low With your blue coat folded on my arm And the porch light keeping watch till dawn If you come back, you don’t need a reason There’s a place at the table for you [Outro] The softer pear is still here And the porch light’s on for you
