Brother, I'll Be By Your Side

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Snow fills the tracks where the old road bends Your name in my mouth like a promise kept The gate swings loose by the birchwood wall I came through the cold when you made that call Your coat on the peg, your cup by the fire A map on the table, the ink running tired You don’t have to tell me what the long night cost I know what it means when a brother is lost [Chorus] Brother, I’ll be by your side through this war When the white wind beats at the timber door If the road runs blind and the daylight is gone We’ll bring each other home, we’ll keep walking on Brother, I’ll be by your side through this war No crown, no oath could ask for more Through the iron cold, through the fields of snow We’ll find our way home, wherever we go [Verse 2] We learned those hills by the sound of the stream By the split-rail fence and the smoke’s thin seam Your hand shook once, then you steadied mine We were young enough to call fear a sign Now the years sit heavy in the furrowed ground Still I know your step when I hear that sound When the north wind turns and the ridge goes gray I’ll take the front, you can lead the way [Chorus] Brother, I’ll be by your side through this war When the white wind beats at the timber door If the road runs blind and the daylight is gone We’ll bring each other home, we’ll keep walking on Brother, I’ll be by your side through this war No crown, no oath could ask for more Through the iron cold, through the fields of snow We’ll find our way home, wherever we go [Bridge] And if one of us falls where the pines stand close The other will carry the name we both chose Past the last stone marker, past the frozen stream Back to the hearth and the life we have seen [Final Chorus] Brother, I’ll be by your side through this war When the white wind beats at the timber door If the road runs blind and the daylight is gone We’ll bring each other home, we’ll keep walking on Brother, I’ll be by your side through this war No crown, no oath could ask for more Through the iron cold, through the fields of snow We’ll find our way home, wherever we go [Outro] The snow can fall deep, the long road can wind I’ll know your footstep; you’ll know mine
