Beauty in the Turning Grass

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Your paper boat leaned by the kitchen sink Blue ink running where the rain got in You said we’d keep it till the river thawed Now the thaw is here, and the boat is gone [Pre-Chorus] I used to hold the door against the wind As if the weather owed us anything [Chorus] Nothing stays the shape it had before Even the tide lets go of every shore So leave your hand open, let the small things pass There’s a kind of beauty in the turning grass [Verse 2] The climbing rose has crossed the garden wall One pale bloom trembling over it all Your old coat hangs where the sunlight falls It still keeps the crease of your shoulder’s slope [Pre-Chorus] I don’t need to make the moment last To know it mattered while it had its time [Chorus] Nothing stays the shape it had before Even the tide lets go of every shore So leave your hand open, let the small things pass There’s a kind of beauty in the turning grass [Bridge] When the last leaf leaves the maple tree The branch is not less whole for being bare And when your name grows quiet in this room I’ll thank the air that carried it in here [Final Chorus] Nothing stays the shape it had before Even the tide lets go of every shore So leave your hand open, let the small things pass There’s a kind of beauty in the turning grass There’s a kind of beauty in the turning grass [Outro] The river moves on The river moves on
