Fire in the Doorway

Lyrics

[Intro] The frost has sealed the northern road Your name is warm beneath my coat [Verse 1] You left the harbor while the nets froze stiff I watched your boat cut through the slate-gray drift Now every mile is marked by buried stone I keep the lamp lit; you are not alone The pine roofs bend beneath the winter load I walk the ridge and read the old snow road If war has taken sleep from your tired eyes Come home to me beneath these northern skies [Chorus] Come through the winter, come back through the snow I’ll be beside you wherever you go When iron is raised and the long night is near I’ll stand at your shoulder; I’ll stay, I am here Come through the winter, let the cold winds roll There’s a fire in the doorway, a place for your soul [Verse 2] I mend the torn red seam along your sleeve And save the words I know you’ll need to breathe The village counts the boats that haven’t come I count the days by kindling, one by one No oath can promise what the dawn will bring But I can meet you when the ravens sing Lay down your shield; let silence fill the room Your hands are home, whatever roads you roam [Chorus] Come through the winter, come back through the snow I’ll be beside you wherever you go When iron is raised and the long night is near I’ll stand at your shoulder; I’ll stay, I am here Come through the winter, let the cold winds roll There’s a fire in the doorway, a place for your soul [Bridge] If the north wind takes the words from your mouth If the dark makes you doubt the way south Follow the smoke from the roof by the shore I’ll be the one waiting, as I was before [Final Chorus] Come through the winter, come back through the snow I’ll be beside you wherever you go When iron is raised and the long night is near I’ll stand at your shoulder; I’ll stay, I am here Come through the winter, let the cold winds roll There’s a fire in the doorway, a place for your soul [Outro] The frost lets go of the northern road Your name comes home beneath my coat
