Good Day in the Deer Woods

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Dawn came cold on the county line Coffee in a thermos, boots tied tight You checked the map by the truck’s dim light I watched the frost turn the fence posts white [Pre-Chorus] We left the road where the cedars lean Followed old tracks through the brown leaves No hurry now, just the woods and us And the first pale streak coming up [Chorus] Take me where the pine tops meet the sky Where a quiet morning makes the whole world wide We’ll walk that ridge and let the day unfold Trading stories while the creek runs cold If luck comes through, we’ll take it slow If not, there’s still this way back home A little fresh air, a little time to roam That’s a good day in the deer woods [Verse 2] You pointed out a rub beside the trail A fresh print pressed where the ground stayed soft We settled in with our backs to oak And watched the sunlight work its way across [Pre-Chorus] A jaybird fussed, then the woods went still Wind changed course at the top of the hill I held my breath, you grinned at me Like we’d found just what we came to see [Chorus] Take me where the pine tops meet the sky Where a quiet morning makes the whole world wide We’ll walk that ridge and let the day unfold Trading stories while the creek runs cold If luck comes through, we’ll take it slow If not, there’s still this way back home A little fresh air, a little time to roam That’s a good day in the deer woods [Bridge] Some years bring a story, some bring only miles Either way, we leave with a little more time And when the evening settles on the fields below I’ll remember this morning long after we go [Final Chorus] Take me where the pine tops meet the sky Where a quiet morning makes the whole world wide We’ll walk that ridge and let the day unfold Trading stories while the creek runs cold If luck comes through, we’ll take it slow If not, there’s still this way back home A little fresh air, a little time to roam That’s a good day in the deer woods [Outro] Boot tracks fading where the tall grass grows Good day in the deer woods, everybody knows
