The Owl Is Staring at Me

Lyrics

[Intro] At the window, past the pane Two round eyes in the October rain [Verse 1] I was buttering toast at a quarter to eight When a shape on the fence made me freeze by the plate Feathers tucked neat, little head turned around Like it knew every secret in this house in town I shut the curtain; it peeked through the seam Now I’m eating my breakfast observed by a dream [Pre-Chorus] I step to the left, it follows my feet I duck by the doorway, it keeps that seat [Chorus] The owl is staring at me The owl is staring at me I wave from the kitchen, it blinks once, slowly The owl is staring at me I lock the back door, I check the front key Still those two big eyes keep finding me The owl is staring at me And I’m starting to think it knows me [Verse 2] I put on my coat for a walk round the block There it sat on the mailbox, as still as a clock I crossed at the corner; it sailed overhead Then landed on Grandma’s old garden shed At the costume party, I hid in a cape It chose the same perch and it wouldn’t escape [Pre-Chorus] I step to the left, it follows my feet I duck by the doorway, it keeps that seat [Chorus] The owl is staring at me The owl is staring at me I wave from the kitchen, it blinks once, slowly The owl is staring at me I lock the back door, I check the front key Still those two big eyes keep finding me The owl is staring at me And I’m starting to think it knows me [Bridge] Then my neighbor comes laughing with a flashlight beam Says, “That’s your porch decoration, it’s plastic, you see” I turn toward the window, prepared to feel brave But the perch is empty—and the curtains just wave [Final Chorus] The owl was staring at me The owl was staring at me I laugh at the kitchen, then hear a soft beat Of wings on the roof right above me I lock the back door, I check the front key There’s a little white feather beside my tea The owl was staring at me Or maybe it’s coming to see me [Outro] Two round eyes in the October rain I pull the curtains—and check them again
