José Keeps Moving

Lyrics

[Verse 1] José takes the long way past the corner store Checks the glass, then checks the door Coffee gone cold in the cup by his hand He scans the room like he still has a plan [Pre-Chorus] The uniform’s folded, the habit stayed Every quiet room gets measured and weighed [Chorus] He’s all work, no rest, one more mile to go Trying to sort the whole wide world into rows Put the pieces in a box, set the box on a shelf But the lid won’t close, and he can’t help himself Still he gets up, still he shoulders the day José keeps moving, finding his way [Verse 2] At home, he lines up the bills by date Keeps every promise, comes in late His boots by the bed, his keys in a tray He plans for the trouble that never came today [Pre-Chorus] A friend says, “Sit down, let the evening be” He says, “In a minute,” and checks the lock twice, then three [Chorus] He’s all work, no rest, one more mile to go Trying to sort the whole wide world into rows Put the pieces in a box, set the box on a shelf But the lid won’t close, and he can’t help himself Still he gets up, still he shoulders the day José keeps moving, finding his way [Bridge] Some nights the weight pulls hard on his back Some mornings the road looks a little less black He can’t make the world hold still in his hands But he can take one breath, make one small stand [Guitar Solo] [Final Chorus] He’s all work, no rest, but he’s learning to slow Letting one loose end stay loose for a while as he goes The pieces can wait; he can leave them unshelved He doesn’t have to carry the whole world himself Still he gets up, still he shoulders the day José keeps moving, and makes room to stay [Outro] One breath, one step, let the evening come through José keeps moving—and rests there, too
