Now Look at Us

Lyrics

[Verse 1] Rain was running down the windows Of a bar I won’t forget. You walked up like you knew me— You just hadn’t met me yet. I laughed, “You’ve got the wrong guy.” You smiled and told me your name. Who knew that little mix-up Was about to change everything? We talked above the music, Both wondering if we fit. You weren’t exactly sure of me; I wasn’t sure of this. But something kept us talking, One more call, another night. I stopped checking what the time was When you were sitting by my side. [Pre-Chorus] There wasn’t one big moment I could circle on a page. You just kept becoming someone I wanted in my every day. [Chorus] Now look at us, Your ring against my hand. From strangers in a crowded bar To a boy who calls us Dad. I get to call you husband, And I still smile at that. You came looking for somebody else— Now look at us. [Verse 2] We packed our lives in boxes, Left familiar roads behind. Went looking for a better life, With yours wrapped up in mine. We had so much to figure out, So much we couldn’t know. But we had someone to turn to In a place we’d learn to call home. Then I married you in Vegas, Said “I do” beneath those lights. And I mean it in our kitchen Just as much as on that night. It’s in making room beside me, In asking how you’ve been. I loved becoming your husband; I love the life that happened then. [Chorus] Now look at us, Your ring against my hand. From strangers in a crowded bar To a boy who calls us Dad. I get to call you husband, And I still smile at that. You came looking for somebody else— Now look at us. [Verse 3] Then Elijah came into the world, And we were somebody’s dads. I looked at him, then looked at you, At everything we suddenly had. That tiny hand around my finger, So much love I couldn’t speak. I’d look at him and start to cry, Then see you looking back at me. I thought I knew your heart by then, But you showed me something new. Watching you become his daddy, I fell in love again with you. Now sometimes I hear you laughing With our boy down the hall, And I stand there for a second, Just listening to it all. [Bridge] Our life is shoes beside the doorway, A bedtime story read twice. It’s finding you beneath the covers At the end of another long night. And I know I can get quiet, Let the whole day hurry past. But Carlos, I am happy here. I need you to know that. I want the birthdays, all the candles, Your face across the room. Elijah getting embarrassed When he sees me kissing you. I want to hear that same old story, Even knowing how it ends. I want the years to keep on coming. I want to live them as your man. [Final Chorus] Now look at us, Your ring against my hand. A better life we built together, And a boy who calls us Dad. From that first uncertain evening To the family that we have— You came looking for somebody else. Now look at us. I’d take the move, the nerves, the boxes, Every road we stumbled through. I’d say “I do” again in Vegas, Watch our boy arrive with you. I couldn’t see it coming, Couldn’t know what we would have. But I’m here, and you’re beside me— Baby, look at us. [Outro] Same rain, same bar, Same awkward little start. I’d stay and learn your name again, Let you find your way into my heart. Our boy asleep, your hand in mine, There’s nowhere I need to be. You thought you knew somebody else. I’m so glad you got to know me.
