Lyrics

[Verse 1] You park the car where the asphalt ends Salt in the air, a tackle box of odds and ends You carry the cake in a foil-wrapped pan One candle left, leaning like a tired man The frosting slid to the corner of the tin Thirty-nine years and you're starting again [Chorus] Let it go, let it go Drop it in the water, watch the candle glow Let it sink slow, let it drift below You don't have to win to come home Let it go [Verse 2] You hook a line you don't plan to keep The pelicans argue, the tide is moving out to sea You think of the faces that didn't show The phone that stayed quiet, the words you let go The cake says Happy Birthday in blue You laugh once, hard, 'cause it's true [Chorus] Let it go, let it go Drop it in the water, watch the candle glow Let it sink slow, let it drift below You don't have to win to come home Let it go [Bridge] You could keep the pan, scrape it clean Make it mean something you've already seen But the gulls don't care what you carry tonight They just ride the wind 'til the light goes right [Verse 3] You tip the whole thing over the rail It hits the surface and the candle fails You watch it bob once, then disappear The water takes it and you're still here You reel your line in, empty and fine The pier lights flicker on down the line [Chorus] Let it go, let it go Drop it in the water, watch the candle glow Let it sink slow, let it drift below You don't have to win to come home Let it go, let it go [Outro] You walk back with your hands in your sleeves Nothing to carry, nothing to leave
