The Northern Door Unlatched

Lyrics

[Verse 1] You left your wool coat on the chair The thaw came early, dampening the stair A tin cup cooled beside the stove I watched the last blue daylight go [Pre-Chorus] The pines kept all the words we lost The river carried what it cost [Chorus] Come back across the frozen water Come back before the spring runs through I’ll keep a place beside the fire And leave the northern door unlatched for you [Verse 2] Your pencil mark is on the wall Six winters measured, one by one I found your note inside the drawer Folded where the old maps slept before [Pre-Chorus] The pines kept all the words we lost The river carried what it cost [Chorus] Come back across the frozen water Come back before the spring runs through I’ll keep a place beside the fire And leave the northern door unlatched for you [Bridge] If the road has changed its name If your hands have learned a different flame There’s no oath you need to keep Only this house, and room to sleep [Final Chorus] Come back across the frozen water Come back as the long days turn to blue I’ll keep a place beside the fire And leave the northern door unlatched for you Leave the northern door unlatched for you [Outro] The thaw runs softly under stone The kettle sings; you’re not alone
