Tips for natural Japanese text to speech

Many kanji have more than one reading, and names are the hardest: 中田 can be Nakata or Nakada, and 一日 is ついたち (the first of the month) or いちにち (one day). If a name or word comes out wrong, write it in hiragana or katakana, the way furigana would show it, for example なかた instead of 中田.

Use 、 and 。 to give the voice places to pause, and split long sentences instead of chaining clauses. Counters change how numbers sound, so 3本 is さんぼん and 1人 is ひとり. If a number, date, or time is read the wrong way, write its reading in hiragana.

What people make with Japanese text to speech

Japanese text to speech is used for YouTube and TikTok narration, game and anime commentary videos, study materials for Japanese learners, presentations, and voice messages for birthdays and the New Year.

Voices AI reads, it does not translate

Voices AI turns written Japanese into speech; it does not translate from other languages. Translate an English script into Japanese before you paste it in, and keep one politeness level, です/ます or plain form, that suits your audience. A native speaker should check anything you plan to publish.

FAQ

Is Japanese text to speech free?

Voices AI is free to download, and you can listen to the Japanese sample on this page. Generating audio uses the credits or subscription in your account, so check the app for current plans.

Can it speak with a Kansai accent?

The voices speak standard Japanese, which is based on Tokyo speech. Text written in Kansai-ben, such as なんでやねん, is read with a standard accent, so it will not sound like a native Osaka speaker.

How do I fix a name that is read the wrong way?

Write it in hiragana or katakana, for example なかた instead of 中田, so there is only one way to read it.

Can it translate English into Japanese?

No. Text to speech reads the text as written. Translate your script into Japanese first, then generate the audio.

Can I download the Japanese audio?

Yes. Download the generated audio and use it in your video editor, presentation, or messages.
