How to use a voice changer with Audacity

1

Install Voices AI Live

Download the free app for Windows or Mac and accept the virtual microphone install. Restart if your computer asks you to.

2

Pick a voice

Preview the voices in the app, or clone your own from a 5-second recording, and select one.

3

Select the recording device

In Audacity, open Audio Setup (or the device toolbar) and choose CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable) on Windows or Voices AI Virtual Mic on Mac as the recording device.

4

Record

Press Record and speak. Audacity records the converted voice.

Live recording vs. converting a file

Voices AI Live converts your voice as you speak, which is ideal for performing character lines and hearing the result immediately. To convert a recording you already made, use the voice changer in the Voices AI app or Studio instead.

Recording tips

Record a few seconds of silence first to check the noise floor, keep your physical microphone at a steady distance, and do several takes of important lines. Edit and export in Audacity as usual.

Audacity voice changer not working? Quick fixes

Audacity doesn't list the Voices AI microphone

Start Voices AI Live first, then fully quit and reopen Audacity so it rescans audio devices. Look for CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable) on Windows or Voices AI Virtual Mic on Mac. If it is still missing, restart your computer to finish the virtual microphone install.

Audacity records my normal voice

Check that the recording device in Audacity is CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable) on Windows or Voices AI Virtual Mic on Mac, not your physical microphone.

The voice sounds robotic, choppy, or cuts out

Turn off extra noise suppression in the app you are talking in, close GPU-heavy programs you are not using, and check that your computer meets the Voices AI Live system requirements.

The recording is very quiet

Raise your physical microphone level in your system sound settings, then record a short test before the real take.
